Any smokers out there?

As this article may prompt some discussion, here is the place for it.

I like to look at this another way. I've been trying to start smoking for years, but just can't do it.
I've just noticed someone using the phrase 'anti-smoking fascists'. Personally, I find this use of a very specific term very lazy. Not much sign of smokes being carted off to camps and murdered yet. The smoking ban we now have in the UK is wonderful. I can go to the pub for more than ten minutes and I don't have to wash all my clothes, jump into the washing machine after them and spend the rest of the next day coughing my own guts up.

Hello tyroneshoelaces. This is 'someone'. You're probably right to say that I was being lazy with the use of the word 'fascist'. I've just looked it up in my Oxford Companion to Philosophy and the definition begins: "Political doctrine combining ethnic nationalism with the totalitarian view that the state should control all aspects of social life." It was the latter aspect of the word that I was thinking of.

Here's a thought experiment: What would the government do if a reliable scientific study proved that universal smoking could help combat climate change?

Make tobacco an illegal drug, imprison smokers (in non-smoking prisons of course) and napalm the tobacco plantations

Actually I've just seen an article which says obesity is more of a danger to health than smoking - so nuke fast food chains, compulsory exercise for all ?

Were you aware that New York City has banned trans fat from being used in preparing restaurant food? In Washington State people can't smoke in restaurants or bars, and when smoking outside have to stay 25 feet away from entrances to buildings!

I was dangerously close to being hooked on nicotine years ago if it wasn't for Mr. Seattle and his anti-smoking views. So love (or the fear of loss of) saved me from that particular addiction!

There's a law in a state (I forget which one) where you ain't allowed to smoke in "your own" house". Only 6 meters outside your house.

Yes. Roll ups. Golden Virginia. 50g for a fiver from my husband's Polish workmate.

Only after I've had a pint or two. Or three. Or ten.

But our local has a patio heater.

I only chose Dunoon as nearest 'city' because there wasn't an 'in the sticks' choice.

LOL.

If you saw the place, you'd laugh your a*se off.

'City' makes Sheffield look like London.

Must be damn beautiful in summer, midgies excepted, otherwise, we really did [censored] up moving here!

That mad health resort that is Switzerland hasn't banned smoking (yet!) Can smoke where ever you like. I loved the special smoking areas in the airport - a square of chairs and little walls - open to everyone who walked past! [:D]
